Week Sixteen, Day Two and the Symphony Orchestra

Today was the fourth grade field trip to the symphony orchestra. My school was able to get some free tickets due to leftover grant money and donated tickets from another school. There is no way to pass that up. It is a state music standard and a cultural experience that most of my students are lacking. The music featured this year was music by Russian composers with an emphasis on Peter and the Wolf (great for introducing the instruments of the symphony orchestra). I thought the performance was great and wished for a moment that I was up there playing with them. The kids did a mostly good job of behaving. There were a few talkers, feet tappers, and hood wearers, but overall no major problems.

Today was crazy busy for me to be able to go on the field trip. I made up two classes yesterday that I couldn't see today because of the trip. The buses loaded during my break time and I got back with ten minutes left of my lunch. I slurped down my soup while setting up my room for the afternoon. After school I had to set up an appointment to see the endodontist for a possible retreat on a previous root canal. Then I had to set up a sub. I finally left around 3:00, so I wasn't much later than usual (but more tired than usual). Thank goodness for fall break this week, so no school on Thursday and Friday. I will be spending part of one of those days at work doing lesson plans, setting up sound equipment, cleaning up my room, and figuring out what to order for my FAME program in March. I should also get my guidelines, parent notes, and rule book ready for my after school choir I need to start soon. The list of to-dos seems to get longer and longer. Every other year this had lead me to start eating more than usual and junkier food than usual. I can't give in this year or I will undo all my hard work.
